Voter transparency
Who pays, who is exempt, and why the wording of 2B matters.
A tax that applies to some homes and not others lives or dies on its definitions. The Town finalized none of this before placing 2A on the ballot, and the details matter.
What will this money actually be used for?
Who will be exempted from this tax?
We recognize that the Town has legitimate financial needs. However, voters should not be asked to approve a tax until its purpose, scope, exemptions, and expected revenue are clearly defined and the outstanding details have been addressed.
The legal challenge
Community members challenged the ballot language
Ballot titles are supposed to state plainly what a yes vote will do for the community. A legal challenge has been filed over the ballot measure's wording, arguing it fails to clearly state the amount that would be collected and who would be exempt. Instead of providing answers to voters, Town Council chose to place 2B on the ballot without addressing these questions.
